otaku glossary
Genshiken is full of references, words and typical expressions that composed the "otaku slang".
Here's a little "dictionaire" ready for your use ^.^

AKIBA - It's the contraction of "Akibahara", the original old name of the quarter Akihabara.
This quarter is really famous as the electronical/technological place to buy mysterious and strange components for PC or everything else (the legend says that it still frequented by soviet spies looking for components for their equipments...)
It's famous also because it hosts the most big underground anime market in Japan: beyond the PC or console's games promotions you can find the secret world of hentai doujinshi and erotic games, in add the old electronics market.
AMATEUR DEALER - This is the common name of the persons who buy their own doujinshi, games and materials in the comic conventions as independent producers.
BISHOUJO GAMES - The bigger and older stream of erotic videogames.
These games are simulation dates involving one or more digital female partners ("Bishoujo" means "Beautiful Girl").
Usually they are filled up with erotic/sexual situations and/or special hentai CGs.
CG - It's the acronym for "Computer Graphic". Are considered CGs also the digital coloured and/or edited illustrations.
CHARAFES - The Characters Festival is the most important convention dedicated to Bishoujo games and Hentai/Soft-hentai videogames.
It's open also to amatorial sellers and the audience is mostly male.
For that reason the organizer promoted also a cosplay contest to attract the female cosplayer audience (for the joy of guys XDDD).
It's hosted at the Tokyo Big Sight.
COMIKET - The Comic Market is probably the most old (1975), famous and interesting event for the otaku and general anime fans.
It's the convention dedicated to amatorial comics (doujinshi), hentai and cosplay.
it counts something like 70.000 requests of partecipation every year by amatorial/independent circles.
It's hosted at the Tokyo Big Sight.

COSPLAY - Contraction of "Costume Play" it is the hobby of dress yourself up as an anime/manga or videogame character from a famous original series.
The persons who practices cosplays frequents the most possible conventions, and some cosplayers (or "layers") become "icons" of the amatorial world.
The original cosplayer makes its costumes by its own, but exists also shops specialized in this kind of merchandising, like the Cospa.
DOUJINSHI - Literally "Books for the same persons", this word speaks about the amatorial/independent comics ispired to original famous series and characters or not.
They born as amatorial magazines ("fanzines") distributed to defined little circles but later they spread in the whole anime/manga couture.
EROGE - Contraction of the English "Erotic Games", another name for H-games.
FIGURE - Commonly it is every object in human form. It can be as a garage kit as a paperwork as a Dollfie.
GARAGE KIT - The common meaning of garage kit is of a plastic model to buy, paste and colour, but once it rappresented one of the most "affective" fanworks: the idea of making something that looks like the personal favourite character or mecha in a solid form.
The expressions derives from the "garage rock" of American's 60s: in that period a group of friends met in the garages of their houses to play the songs of their favourite artists or create their own sound. It's the same concept of the amatorial Japanese modelism.
GENKEISHI - Literally "sculptor", is the models maker of garage kits and figures.
H-GAMES - Contraction of "Hentai Games" or "Ecchi Games". The "H" ("Ecchi") designs every adult materials in Japan.
MEGANEKKO - Literally "Girl with glasses". It's one of the most fetish icons of the H-games and doujinshi.
NEKOMIMI - Litterally "Cat's ears". Another of the most powerful icons in the otaku couture.
RESIN-CAST - A special plastic-resin material used in modellism, more easy and versatile than the common polyester.
WONDER FESTIVAL - It's one of the most important convention dedicated to garage kits and modellism fanatics.
The event is managed by Kaiyodo, one of the most big modellism and figures producer company in the world.
The Wonder Festival rappresents the change to become famous modeler selected by Kaiyodo for the Wonder Showcase (A special event in the convention to promote the works of the most talented artists) and become a rappresentative celebrity of the sector.
It's hosted at the Tokyo Big Sight.
